THE UK ONSHORE GEOPHYSICAL LIBRARY
- The Onshore Seismic Databank -

THE OFFICIAL ARCHIVE AND RELEASE OF SEISMIC DATA ACQUIRED THROUGH OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION

What is the library:

The UK Onshore Geophysical Library (UKOGL) was established in 1994 in conjunction with the Department Of Trade And Industry (DTI) and the UK Onshore Operators Group.  It manages the archiving and official release of seismic data recorded over landward areas of the UK.
Operating as a registered charity and funded by revenues from data sales and donations, the Library aims to bring all available UK onshore seismic data into a secure centralised digital archive whilst providing efficient access to all interested parties. Under arrangements with Her Majesty's Stationary Office (HMSO), data is normally made available for release once a five year period of confidentiality has passed.

Library Structure

The activities and policies of the Library are overseen by a Board of Trustees selected to represent the interests of both industry and academia. Under the chairmanship of Dr. Malcolm Butler, a respected authority on the UK onshore, the Library draws on the expertise of Dr. Alf Whittaker (British Geological Survey),
Mr. Robin McKie (Star Energy) and Professor Howard Johnson (Imperial College). DTI liaison is provided by Mr. Geoff Swann.
The day to day organisational and secretarial work of the Library is carried out by Oil Management Services Ltd, who provided the services of Mr. Henry Boyd as secretary to the Board of Trustees.
The technical management of the Library is undertaken by Lynx Information Systems Ltd, who carry out all aspects related to data retrieval, archiving and sales. With a proven track record in providing digital archives and data management systems, Lynx report directly to a Library Management Committee, chaired by Mr. Eric King (Star Energy), which in turn is responsible for ensuring that the policies of the Board are effectively implemented.

Data Archive

This valuable national resources provides and important insight into semi-regional structural settings and stress regimes, enabling the study of sedimentary sequences from the surface down to depths of 4000m. Although traditionally acquired for use in the exploration of oil and gas, the data is also of value to industries such as mining, water resources and engineering, as well as providing an invaluable record for academic research and teaching.
The Library currently has archived a substantial portion of the estimated 70,000 km plus of available seismic data including significant data set contributions from Agip (Sun data), Brabant , British Gas, Edinburgh, Elf (RTZ data), Enterprise, Pentex, Roc Oil and Sands (Sovereign data). The legal requirements to curate the data in perpetuity is transferred along with the data from the previous owners to the Library.
The Library strives to locate all available data items pertaining to each seismic profile providing a fully reconciled archive of:
Field seismic data in demultiplexed SEG-Y format.
Supporting observers reports and all associated acquisition documents as scanned TIF images.
Line location data in UKOOA format.
Processed digital stack / migrated data in SEG-Y format.
·Hard copy stack / migrated sections.

Costs

A License Fee of £100 per km is levied plus output costs, guaranteeing the provision of hard copy sections, digital stacked data and digital location data. Field data and supporting acquisition data can only be supplied on a best effort basis.
An Escalation Fee of £10 per km a payable by each member of a Joint Venture Group where applicable. The License Fee is waived for academic institutions in a member state of the European Community. For data not currently part of the Library archive an additional fee is charged, presently averaging £32 per km, to cover the data retrieval and processing costs. A full price list and a copy of the License Terms and Conditions are available from the Library.

Academic Support

One of the Library's main objectives is to make seismic data readily available to all academic institutions for teaching and research purposes. By the waiving of License Fees and the establishment of an Academic Fund to cover reproduction costs, free seismic data is available to all interested departments.
